Living Outside the Race Box

“Where are you from?”

This is one of the top three questions I’ve been asked throughout my life. I get asked this often because part of how we relate to people is by sorting them into little boxes we’re already familiar with. When people meet me, I don’t quite fit into any of their boxes. I’m used to it; it’s part of growing up biracial. I’m not really sure what it’s like inside either of my parent’s cultures. From one perspective, I get both boxes and both cultures. But from the other, I don’t get either.

The word “influence,” thrown around often in our society, was originally used to describe a celestial fluid that, flowing from the stars, would make its way to Earth and affect human decisions.

This Way for the Secret Weapon to Self-Care

“You can sleep when you’re dead.” “Rest is for the weak.” “Burn the midnight oil.”

These are common phrases we hear all the time as we strive to work harder so that we can play harder — except many of us aren’t actually doing any playing. A great deal of Americans don’t get PTO (paid time off), and many of those who do are too scared to actually take it. In 2015, more than half of working Americans have unclaimed PTO at the end of the year. Although it may be easy to let the months go by without taking a break, the consequences are counterproductive and potentially dangerous. More and more studies are showing how damaging burnout can be, and why we need to start getting serious about taking a break.
